Man, that really sucks. I can relate to the "no money for car fixes now" thing, esp. since we just sunk $2300 we didn't have into the van.
We went through a couple of windshields in YellowSnow, but between gravel on the roads in the winter for traction (and the highway in/out of town being a lot of gravel ... they didn't finish paving it until 2006 or so), and the heavy temp. changes, that's pretty normal.
(We once had a small crack on the bottom of the windshield. When you turn on your defroster to be able to see out of it, that part of the windshield gets pretty warm. If it's -40 outside, that crack'll grow on you, sometimes while you're looking at it....)
