It is happening (a) in some areas more than others, (b) to certain classes of "victim" more than others, and (c) with a relatively low frequency. The combination of the above with the combination of my personal stats (it ain't happening so much in my area, it ain't happening so much to white middle-aged males no matter how liberal they are, and it ain't happening all that often) means that I'm not yet panicking about it.
When (a) it starts happening more where I'm at, (b) to people like me, and (c) with a higher frequency of incidents, that's when I'll really want to be better-armed.
Yes, it's a tad selfish, but then, aren't we all? The altruism of self-preservation and protection of one's family only goes so far.
