The difficulty with any "reasonable" health-care system is that a significant fraction of the population (and the most affluent part) will have to cut back on things that Americans (particularly) value: the ability to buy whatever their money can command, the ability to get visibly better service than poorer people, and the ability to decide for themselves which medicines and treatments they should have. None of this, of course, improves lifespans or health (and #3 hurts them), but that's not the point...
